GOPURAM

An interesting article I read in a journal, on Temple Kalasam. First there was an un-written rule that no construction should be higher than the temple Gopuram (tower) in that town. For, one, after building the temple tower at the apex, Kalasams(round pot saped metal) are fixed . They are generally  said  to be made up of either gold, silver, copper or Panchalok as these are good conductors of electricity. Each metallic kalasam is then filled up with grains viz. rice, maize, corn, varagu & samai (millets) etc. to the extent of 50 to 100kgs.and sealed. It is said that varagu seeds have the maximum capacity to withstand high amount of electrical energy! This appears to have been now confirmed by scientists according to the author. 

Once in 12 years these grains are removed and the kalasam is filled up with fresh grains. This funtion is called  “Kudamuzzuku” or Kumbhabishekam. Why 12 years? Because the grains inside the kalasam's lose their potency in 12 years time.   

Next, if at any time there was excessive rains and floods  it will destroy all the

cultivated fields and thereby the grains. At that time these grains kept above the gopuram safely comes in handy to be used for the subsequent seasons’ sowing, thereby preventing the destruction of the gene pool. Perhaps fathers & mothers of green revolution should know this!

Now for the unwritten rule that  no other construction should be higher than the temple. During monsoon thunder shower, the temple tower will take the first hit and it is said, after a study, that the metallic kalasams will deflect the high electrical energy beyond 7,500 sq.mts.. Hence residents living within that area may escape injury/death.  Normally 4 towers are constructed on four sides of the temple that means on each side to the extent of 7,500 sq.mts. of area becomes protected from the damage that is likely to be caused by the lightning!

Now look at the old Tamil maxim you will understand what our elders meant, "Kovil illa ooril Kudi irukka vendam" "Don't live in a place where there is no temple."

"கோவில் இல்ல ஊரில் குடி இருக்க வேண்டாம்" தமிழ் ஒருத்ததுவம் உண்டு.கோபுரம் என்பது மனிதரால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட உயரமானஅமைப்பு ஆகும். இவை அவற்றின் நீள, அகலங்களைக் காட்டிலும் பல மடங்கு உயரமாக இருக்கும். கோபுரங்கள் பொதுவாக அவற்றின் உயரத்திலிருந்து பயன் பெறுவதற்காகவே கட்டப்படுகின்றன. ஒரு, நுனிப்பகுதி கோவில் கோபுரம் கட்டி பிறகு, கலசத்துடன் சரி செய்யப்படுகின்றன (சுற்று பானை வடிவம்மாக இருக்கும் ).இவை தனியாகவோ அல்லது வேறு பெரிய அமைப்புக்களின் ஒரு பகுதியாகவோ அமைக்கப்படலாம்.கலசம் பொதுவாக இந்த மின்சாரம்  கடத்திகள் ஆகும் . தங்கம், வெள்ளி, தாமிரத்தால் கலசம் செய்யப்படாது கூறப்படுகிறது.ஒவ்வொரு உலோக கலசம் உள்ளே அரிசி, சோளம், மக்காச்சோளம்,மற்றும் சாமை அணுக (தானியங்கள்) கொண்டு நிரப்பப்பட்டிருக்கும். 

KALASAM

இவை மின் ஆற்றல் அதிக கொண்டிருக்கிறது என்று சொல்வார்கள்.கலசம் 12 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு  ஒரு முறை தங்கள் ஆற்றலை இழக்க காரணம்.12 வருடங்களுக்கு ஒரு முறை இந்த தானியங்கள் நீக்கப்படும் மற்றும் கலசம் புதிய தானியங்கள் கொண்டு நிரப்பப்பட்டிருக்கும். இந்த விழா "குடமுழ்ழுகு" அல்லது "கும்பாபிஷேகம்" என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.
